iDEAL is becoming Wero: a small shop's checklist
Far less, and far later, than the noise around it suggests.
If you sell online to Dutch customers, the payment method most of them use is changing its name and, underneath, its infrastructure. This is one of the few payment stories that genuinely requires something of you — but far less, and far later, than the noise around it suggests.
What is actually changing
The Dutch Payments Association states that from the end of January 2026 the transition from the brand name iDEAL to iDEAL | Wero begins. The two names appear together first, in webshops, banking apps and on payment pages.
Behind the branding, EPI — the European company behind Wero — is moving transactions onto the European Wero platform in a controlled, step-by-step process that starts after approval from De Nederlandsche Bank.
For your customers, very little changes. They still pay through their own bank, with the same security and the same speed. The thing they will notice is a logo.
The date that matters to you
By the end of 2027 at the latest, every iDEAL merchant will have switched to Wero. After that, the iDEAL brand is phased out step by step.
That is the deadline. It is not this quarter, and anyone telling you your shop breaks imminently is selling something.
What this means in practice for a small shop
Almost certainly: your payment provider handles it and you update a logo.
If you take iDEAL through Mollie, Stripe, Adyen, a platform's built-in checkout or any other provider, the technical migration is theirs. Your job is to make sure they have told you their plan, and to apply the branding change when they say so.
Three things worth doing this year:
- Ask your provider, in writing, what their migration timeline is. One email. Keep the answer.
- Find every place the iDEAL logo appears — checkout, footer, product pages, email templates, printed material — so that updating it is a list rather than a hunt.
- Check nothing hardcodes the word "iDEAL" in your own copy, like a delivery page that says "pay with iDEAL only".
What not to do
Do not migrate early on your own initiative. This is a coordinated industry change with a phased plan; being ahead of your provider buys you nothing and risks a checkout that works differently from every other shop.
Do not rebuild your checkout because of this. The checkout is the most expensive page in any shop to get wrong, and this change does not require touching it.

The short version
The name is changing now, the plumbing is changing gradually, and the deadline is the end of 2027. Your provider does the work. You update a logo, keep one email confirming their timeline, and otherwise carry on selling.

Frequently asked
- Will my shop stop accepting iDEAL payments suddenly?
- No. The change is phased and coordinated across the industry, with the end of 2027 as the point by which every merchant has switched. Any message implying your checkout breaks imminently is worth treating as a sales pitch.
- Do I have to contact my payment provider about Wero?
- One email is worth sending: ask for their migration timeline in writing and keep the answer. You are not asking them to do anything special — you are establishing who is responsible and when, which is the whole of your exposure here.
